Heavy on the Norwegian space cowboys this week, must be the weather, nothing wrong with that!
Can’t help but feel that I’ve gone through some dubious rite of passage or blog initiation today, getting my firstest DMCA takedown notice for the Cocoa Tea post. There’s a whole heap being written about the deluge of these foolish and backward thinking actions, so I wont add too much (yeah right). However I spent an awful lot of time, soul searching and weighing up doing this blog, especially as a record label, copyright owner and sporadic music maker. My mind was made up when some blogs started posting The Naked And Famous tracks while they were conflabulating a bit of a buzz at CMJ in NYC, it’s something I could only view as positive (and downright healthy from a band/label perspective.) Personally I  source around half the music, I then go to great lengths buying overseas, from blogs. So I know  from my own experience, it’s an invaluable tool for music discovery and support. Furthermore you can’t put the genie back in the bottle, even though that genie is part of what is making running a record company, especially on artistic criteria, ridonkulously tricky these days (let alone tomorrow or next year).
Curiously enough, the Cocoa Tea tracks had already been scratched and deleted from Divshare (after a week,) before I got the notice and the post was removed by blogger, ah well. I’ll ping the Cocoa Tea photos up with another post soon. I guess, given that it’s VP who are presumably part of the 1400 labels (not that many labels really, considering there’s getting towards a hundred operational labels in NZ, how many must there be in America?) who are signed up to the DMCA witch-hunt, and they now own Greensleeves, I’m going to have to rethink some posts I had planned and get some crusty old 7″s into the digital boneyard. If there’s more aggro I’ll consider the options and moving the blog-a-log or whatever. Having had a couple of people hit me up to say they’ve bought stuff introduced to them on StinkInc, by hitting the Buy links (I’m looking at you PM & CC, nice one) after just a couple of weeks of flinging out this nonsense, I’ve got no qualms …. or other strangely named things. Enough of my violated mithering, I suppose this adds a lottery facet to posting tracks…. woopee!
I’ve yanked a track from the sublime Menahan Street Band album ‘Make The Road by Walking’ , we’ve all had more than our fair share of pasty simulacrum soul over the last few years, but this is made of sterner stuff. I was chuffed when Jay-Z  (or more precisely Diddy’s Hit Makers, who had the 7″ slipped into a sampling stash they were buying, by an onside and onto it record shop feller) used the albums title track, superbly cut up, for his ‘Roc Boys’. But the smile faded a fraction when I realised that a much utilised, secret weapon seven, that always got someone coming up and asking ‘WHAT IS THIS ????%$%*^&’ was now going to be ‘a version of that Jay-Z track’. Quite literally, thems the breaks. Hopefully the Hova makeover is more than just a good story for Thomas Brenneck’s band, and they get the sales they richly deserve. You can assist with that by loving up the links below, yes indeed.
(Buy) in NZ, seems to be CD only.
(Buy) the wax (an alright pressing for the amount of tracks too) and/or the CD direct from the label Mabel.
