I’m kind of fiending to fling something up from the new ZZK comp (which got a thorough airing tonight) but in the interests of balance (El Hijo De La Cumbia last week, and it probably deserves a post of its own) and because it’s a project that surely deserves some serious shine, here’s DJ Kentaro taking to some vintage Revolutionaries business.
There’s been more than a few roots and revive mix-ups by hiphoperised turntable wizards, but I reckon Kentaro has bested them all with ‘Tuff Cuts’. This is one of only a few tracks where he goes to town on the decks, showing off the truly phenomenal skills that knocked my proverbial socks off when he did a Tiger Translate gig in AK a few years ago. I’d rate him amongst the very best scratch’n’mix and generally make the turnies do un-natural and wonderful things.. DJ’s I’ve ever seen, and crucially he’s completely with the music, not just indulging in masturbatory attention seeking behaviour at the expense of the songs, as so many do. That sort of class is well evident on ‘Tuff Cuts’ which is a brilliant ride from start to finish with a heavy lean on Prince Fari amongst the gems from the Pressure Sounds catalogue.
Enough of my rambling, let’s get on with the music..if you will.
Buy the album from the label or locally Southbound have the handle so usual supects.

12″ here or locally from Conch, Beat Merchants etc

New Stinkmix up here in the next week, hopefully before the weekend – time allowing. Different fettle of kish to the Stinkbombs which is still havailable for an evening of delicate DLing and remarkably relaxed re-assembly a post or two down…
